Rosacea & facial redness

What is it?

Rosacea is a red facial rash that most often affects women with fair skin, usually between 30 and 60 years of age. This condition can be easily mistaken for acne. Rosacea is a long term skin condition that typically affects the face and results in redness, pimples, swelling, small and superficial dilated blood vessels. Areas affected the most are the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. A red, enlarged nose may occur in severe disease, a condition known as rhinophyma. Treatments such as antibiotics or anti-acne medication can control and reduce symptoms. Left untreated, it tends to worsen over time.

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. There are several theories regarding its origin, including overactive facial blood vessels and inflammation, genetic, environmental, vascular and inflammatory factors.

Rosacea is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, but treatment can help relieve symptoms and improve skin appearance.

It is important to avoid trigger factors – anything that causes rosacea to flare – such as sunlight, hairspray, heat, very hot or very cold weather, stress, alcohol, spicy foods, heavy physical exertion. Some women also find hot flushes and menopause aggravate rosacea, but may be also aggravated by many cosmetics and skin care products, and is particularly sensitive to topical steroid preparations. Remember to always wear sun screen.

Cutera’s signature treatment “Laser Genesis” can also be beneficial in treating background redness, flushing and excess sebum production that is present in Rosacea sufferers. This revolutionary, non-invasive and safe treatment effectively treats variety of treatments and assists in skin rejuvenation, helps to treat large pores, uneven skin texture, fine lines and skin laxity.

LED Light Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that works at a cellular level. The soothing, deep penetrating LED lights target deep into cells heightening their internal functions, photo-stimulating dermal blood flow, and creates faster healing. All these factors are contributing in decreasing the size of blood vessels. Consequently, the constricted blood vessels become less visible which in turn  reduce severity of the symptoms.

Avoidance of trigger factors, previously discussed, is one step towards improvement of your skin condition. Some skin care may aggravate symptoms, particularly those containing alcohol (e.g. in toners), topical steroids and any skin care that irritates the skin such as vitamin A preparations (tretinoin). Changing your skin care or avoidance of certain skin care chemicals may be advisable. Use a non-irritating sunscreen-physical sunblock agents with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide tend to irritate skin less than chemical sunscreens.
