Intense Pulsed Light

What is it?

Intense pulse light (IPL) is non-invasive, non-ablative procedure used predominantly in dealing with skin pigmentation or removal of unwanted hair.

Contrary to information one could find on majority of non-medical websites available today – IPL is NOT a laser. Lasers use very narrow, focused, high-energy beam of light to perform on a very small area of the skin at one time, affecting very little of surrounding tissue. On the other hand, IPLs use high-energy beam of light as well, but diffused and conducted over much larger area of the skin. Spreading into surrounding tissue cannot be avoided. Results in certain treatments could be similar, but they are completely different procedures.

IPL cannot be used for darker skin types nor if case of underlying medical condition. This is the reason why proper initial consultation is required prior starting with the treatment.

Photo-rejuvenation is a non-invasive, non-ablative treatment using intense pulsed light (IPL) that will restore skin to a clearer, more youthful state.
At NOVA Aesthetics and Women’s Health Medical Clinic, we use medical grade IPL device called Cutera LimeLight IPL. It can treat pigmented skin lesion very effectively as well as offering and advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with ageing and photo-damage at the same time as this treatment stimulates collagen production and reduce appearance of large pores.

The IPL emits light waves that passes through the haemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying pigment and predominant protein in the red blood cells) or melanin (brown pigment in freckles and sun spots). This causes damage to the vessel wall or the melanin pigment fragments. The body absorbs those small particles, thus assisting with issues such as rosacea and skin redness as well as pigmented skin conditions.

Our IPL treatments can achieve very good results with little discomfort and downtime. Prior to treatment we apply gel to protect and cool down superficial layer of the skin. During the procedure clients may feel mild stinging sensation like the snapping of a rubber band, or mild pinching. After the treatment, we will remove any residual gel and apply medical grade topical preparations to further help with your skin condition.
Following the IPL treatment, brown spots start to darken (appearance of “coffee-ground)” and skin may be slightly red and mildly swollen. This lasts about few hours, possibly couple of days. Within one to three weeks, the darkened spots will flake off and fade. Mineral make up can be applied immediately after the treatment, if required.

IPL photo-rejuvenation is ideal for any part of your face, neck and décolletage as well as back of your hands and upper limbs with telangiectasia (tiny veins), skin redness or brown spots.

Hair Reduction

At NOVA Aesthetics and Women’s Health Medical Clinic, we use medical grade IPL device called Cutera Prowave IPL.

Procedure is targeting pigment in hair follicle, with best results on clients with darker hair. As long as there is some pigment in your hair, hair removal treatment should be effective, but as a guideline – more pigment, better results.

The number of treatments you may require depends on your skin type, hair thickness and density as well as growth cycle of your hair. At one treatment, approximately only 30% of your hair will be in growth phase – called anagen. Hair can be successfully treated when in this phase only and different parts of the body have different anagen timing. That is the reason why three or more treatments may be required, spaced as recommended by our trained medical staff. For instance, for facial hair removal your treatments may be spaced between 6-8 weeks, for body hair 8-10 weeks and for back or legs about 10-12 weeks.

How many sessions?

In case of photo-rejuvenation, most clients will see results after one to three IPL treatments. Additional treatment may be required in case of severely sun damaged skin.
Length of results with IPL treatments can be long lasting for clients who do not spent a lot of time unprotected in the sun and are using appropriate skin care products, sun screen included. They may need annual maintenance treatment only. If you spend a lot of time outdoors your redness and pigmentation may return sooner and more treatments may be required.

In case of hair reduction, three to four treatments should be enough to remove hair from your area of interest with time required between treatments depends on the treated area.
